The Ask

The creative team at Disney Branded Television tasked us with creating a :45 animation celebrating civil rights activist and American hero, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As part of Disney’s larger “Use Your Voice” campaign, the purpose of this piece would be twofold: to demystify the federal holiday we know as MLK Day, and to teach kids about the history of MLK himself, encouraging them to use their own voices for good.

The Challenge

Tackling the incredibly accomplished history of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a challenge all of its own. Luckily for us, we were provided with a great script to work from, allowing us to focus our full attention on the flow of the animation and the transitions we would use to carry us through each stage of MLK’s journey. We also wanted to explore the use of texture to bring more personality and character into the design.

The Result

We called on our good friend and Atlanta-based artist, George F. Baker III, to create the illustrations used throughout this piece, knowing that his distinct style would add just the right amount of playfulness we needed. Using Illustrator for the look, Adobe After Effects for the animation, and Cinema 4D for the flow, we were able to bring his illustrations to life, weaving seamlessly through the pages of MLK’s life story. In the end, this animation achieved a sweet balance between informative and educational, but packed with positivity and inspiration.
